Inmates train dogs for six weeks, teaching them basic commands such as sit, down, stay, walk on leash and come. Inmate-trainers participate in group therepy that Canine Community Corps provides. At the end of six weeks, each dog is placed with a military veteran.
What We Do
The Canine Community Corps promotes rescue, dignity and service among military veterans, prison inmates and shelter dogs. Through our efforts, these three populations create a compassionate community in which inmates repay part of their debt to society and prepare to rejoin Maine and New Hampshire communities by training rescued dogs to be emotional support animals or therepy dogs. The dogs, in turn, help wounded veterans regain their independance and assist other veterans in need.
