What We Do

Official Parks & Recreation and Public Property Department for the City of Sanford. This department is charged with providing recreational opportunities at a modest cost to the taxpayers in the community and to also provide for regional opportunities in the greater Sanford area. The Sanford Parks and Recreation Department was formally recognized in the mid 70's and up until that time rellied on stipend Park Commisioners who were responsible for activities. The focus became quite minimal as these commisioners offered things that they were in fact participating in. Playgrounds and other park areas were operated under the direction of the commisioners in the summer and usually by paid staff mostly school teachers and high school students. With Charter changes the focus of the Department grew to what it is today, a multi faceted municipal department that strives to provide opportunities to local residents that perhaps would have been out of there reach if it were not for the organizational support of the Department.  This division is also responsible for most open space and trails within the community and works with others to continually provide for safe and accessible facilities.
