Big Brothers Big Sisters Of Southern Maine

BBBS of Southern Maine makes and supports 1-to-1 matches between children, age 7-17, and an adult or high school volunteer who acts as a mentor to provide friendship, support, and guidance. PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATIONA community-based match is one where the mentor, known as a "BIG," spends time with his or her mentee, known as a "Little," engaged in community activities. The commitment is 7-10 hours a month for at least 12 months.A site-based match is when a High School or Adult Big is matched to an elementary age child. The match meets once a week for one hour at the Little's school or afterschool program. Matches only meet when school is in session. The volunteer obligation is 12 months or more.IMPACT of BBBS MENTORINGAfter just 18 months with a BBBS Mentor, children have greater confidence, better relationships with friends and family and higher aspirations for their future. The are more engaged in school and avoid choosing risky behavior.
