Who We Are

For 50 years, The Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) has provided the resources, programs and people to ensure that older adults, adults living with disabilities, and caregivers in Cumberland and York counties are empowered to take charge of their health and well-being, maintain their independence, and age well at home.

Founded in 1973, under the authority of the federal Older Americans Act, SMAA is a non-profit organization dedicated to planning and implementing social services for adults age 60 and older.

What We Do

SMAA’s programs meet urgent needs while maximizing independence for older adults. Along with serving as a hub of information and resources, SMAA addresses a wide range of needs, including nutrition, wellness, social isolation, finances, housing, and respite, including:

- Meals on Wheels & congregate dining
-Adult day programs
-Family caregiver support and education
-Medicare counseling & seminars
-Money management assistance
-Volunteer-based companionship (infused into all of SMAA's programming!)
-Information & referral and service coordination
-Evidence-based falls prevention programs, including Tai Chi and A Matter of Balance
-And more!

SMAA's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is part of the Corporation for National Community Service's (CNCS) AmeriCorps Seniors. SMAA's RSVP acts as a clearinghouse, connecting volunteers over the age of 55 to positions at dozens of nonprofits throughout Cumberland and York counties.

SMAA is one of five Agencies on Aging that serve the state of Maine.
