Volunteer: Summer Meals Site Volunteer

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a USDA program that helps kids who rely on free and reduced-price school meals to continue receiving healthy food during the summer. Any child under 18 can receive a free meal.

 

Sites throughout Cumberland County are looking for volunteers to: assist with meal distribution assist in counting the number of children receiving meals  play with and entertain children while they are visiting the site! assist with meal clean-up

Volunteers are needed Mondays through Fridays from the time school gets out until it starts up again in the fall. Volunteers are needed throughout Cumberland County. Locations include Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Windham, Gray-New Gloucester, and the Lakes Region.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP; also known as Food Sup, or the Food Supplement Program, formerly known as Food Stamps) is an important safety net program designed to help individuals stretch their food budget and buy nutritious foods they need to live a healthy lifestyle. 1 in 4 Mainers go hungry at some point in their lives- but many Mainers are too proud to receive SNAP, believe they do not qualify for SNAP, or have trouble figuring out the application process.   As a SNAP volunteer you would be trained to help Mainer’s overcome barriers and stigma in order to get the food they need. Looking for volunteers for Cumberland and Oxford Counties. Responsibilities: Learn about the Food Supplement Program Learn about barriers, myths, misconceptions, and truths about hunger Provide Mainers with assistance applying for SNAP Follow up with SNAP applicants to ensure they receive the support they need
