Volunteer: Beacon Hospice Patient Visitor Volunteer

Your presence is needed!!  Free hospice volunteer classes to be scheduled.  Learn how you can improve the quality of life for patients, lessen their isolation and comfort them and their caregivers. Beacon Hospice needs volunteers to provide companionship to terminally ill patients and their families. We need people from Woolwich to Ogunquit and out to the NH border. You may provide a friendly visit or give a caregiver a break.  You may be drawn to sit "vigil" at the bedside.  Perhaps you are a Veteran who would like to support other veterans who are near the end of their journeys?   Or do you have a certified therapy dog who enjoys making new friends?  If so, we welcome you to explore these and other possibilities with us.  Classes will be held at the Beacon Hospice South Portland office located near the Maine Mall.  For more information, please call 207-772-0929. The rewards you will receive from this work will far exceed the time you put in! Thank you.

Volunteer: Beacon Hospice Chart-a-Life Posters

A key tool in our dementia care is the creation of a life chart for the patient who can no longer speak.  You can be instrumental in contacting family and gathering the life story of the patient suffering from Alzheimers and various dementias.  Then you can also create the collage, putting into graphic form the details of this person's life.  These posters help to preserve the identity of the person who can no longer tell you about themselves, thereby helping caregivers to know the person behind the disease and to find a bond with them.  Artistic skills are not essential so much as identifying what is most significant to the person and graphically portraying it.  Some patients are still able to connect with these images, families love them, and caregivers use them to find a way into their memories.  Training is 4 hours for doing the charts and 21 hours for contacting the families.  We will show you all you need to know.  Free volunteer training will take place at a mutually convenient time.  Please call Donna Teague at 207-772-0929 for more details.
