Volunteer: ELL Afterschool Volunteers NeededAre you ready to make a difference in the lives of immigrants and refugees living in the Greater Portland area? The Intercultural Community Center is looking for dedicated volunteers to serve in its afterschool program, known as "Power School". The Power School offers unique opportunities for volunteers to work with students from multicultural backgrounds. Volunteers may be asked to teach small classes of students, to be tutors or mentors. People interested in volunteering for the Power School, please email Bruce Garrow. Hours for Afterschool: 4:00pm to 6:30pm Monday thru Thursday (Holidays and days-off correspond with Westbrook Schools Calendar). Volunteers can work daily, or at specific time slots during the week. We look for volunteers with talents in different areas and at various levels of experience. The goal is to give these students the added support to be life-long learners and contributing citizens by capitalizing on the many skills and talents they already have (many of these students are trilingual, for example). Power School students are from Westbrook or Portland schools, grades 3 through 8. Curriculum support is designed to provide resources for children of moderate economic means while helping ELLs (English Language Learners) gain English fluency, solidify academic gains and develop social skills in a fun, low-pressure learning environment. A mimimum time AmeriCorp position is available for a volunteer to assist students and teachers by working in classrooms, either one on one or in groups, to further students' understanding of math and/or science concepts and helping them to improve writing skills and reading comprehension in different subjects. An AmeriCorp stipend will be provided. A successful candidate will be patient and caring, respectful of diversity, comfortable working with students from different countries, and comfortable working in a high-energy environment.
