Drivers support the New Mainer population in Freeport by providing rides to community members who require assistance getting to appointments, grocery stores, etc.  

Rides are available to those who are temporarily or permanently unable to drive, have no vehicle, and have no other means of transportation. The service is free of charge to all riders. 

This service is made possible through the generosity of our volunteer drivers. Volunteers donate their time, vehicle and fuel to provide this service. Our transportation program would not exist without our volunteer drivers!  Rides are scheduled several days in advance, using an on-line scheduling tool.  

Drivers need a valid driver's license, current insurance and to successfully pass a background check.

Packers support the BackPack Program at FCS by packing bags full of snacks and meals for students to take home over the weekend.

The BackPack Program at FCS provides more than 50 children in K-12 in RSU5 who are living with the effects of chronic hunger with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food to eat during weekends throughout the school year. Proper nutrition over the weekend ensures students can come to school on Monday ready to learn. 

 

This position is where the FCS Values Statement begins: “We are dedicated to helping one another with respect and compassion, in an inclusive and welcoming environment.” Volunteers here will be a friendly and informa­tive first point of contact for visitors as they come through the Center’s main entrance. Greeters will direct patrons to the Food Pantry, Thrift Shop, bathrooms, etc.; and answer questions as they arise.

This shift can be performed standing and/or sitting.

Cashiers in the Thrift Shop are a welcoming first face as patrons enter the shop.  They also bag and ring patrons purchases up when ready to leave!

The Thrift Shop at Freeport Community Services is a primary source of revenue for FCS, most of which enables FCS to offer a myriad of programs and services to the community. Donations & recycling helps our planet by keeping useful items out of a landfill, helps strengthen our communities by funding programs and services for Freeport Community Services and provides a good opportunity for thrifty shoppers to find great bargains. 

The FCS Thrift Shop is among the best thrift stores in New England. It is welcoming, organized and conveniently located in downtown Freeport with free parking, and features a wide selection of in-season clothing and footwear, as well as housewares, furniture, vintage goods and collectibles. There’s always something new and unexpected at the Thrift Shop.

Cashiers receive a 10% volunteer discount and a first-look at items before they arrive on the Thrift Shop floor.

Sorting Room Assistants support the FCS Thrift Shop by working as part of a behind-the-scenes team in the Sorting Room to sort, fold, and hang donations before they go out to the Thrift Shop floor for sale.

This shift requires standing and the ability to lift up to 15 lbs.

Distribution Assistants support the FCS Food Pantry by helping shoppers find what they are looking for in the pantry and restocking products as necessary.

This shift requires standing and the ability to lift up to 30 lbs. 

Donations Collectors support the FCS Food Pantry by picking up donations at local grocery stores, delivering them to the pantry, and helping to unload. 

Volunteers can use a truck provided by FCS to perform this duty.

This opportunity requires ability to walk, stand, and dynamic movements like bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, stooping as needed.

Greeters support the FCS Food Pantry by being a welcoming first point of contact for shoppers when they arrive, checking them into our database, and helping to maintain a queue as shoppers wait to be admitted into the pantry.

This position can be performed sitting and/or standing.

Tote Delivery supports the BackPack Program at FCS by delivering tote bags full of snacks and meals to local schools, where staff distribute them to students to take home over the weekend.

The FCS Community Meal is an opportunity for anyone to enjoy a homemade meal. The lunches are free of charge to anyone, from anywhere, and serve approximately 60-75 people on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month. 

Volunteers working as part of the Cooking Team will communicate with the Volunteer Coordinator to determine a menu (based on surplus items in FCS' Food Pantry), which they will cook at FCS' kitchen on the Thursday before the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month. The Cooking Team is responsible for cooking & bagging meals, as well as cleaning the kitchen.
