Description

Make a Difference. Be a Respite Care Companion.

The Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) is looking for compassionate, reliable volunteers to join our Respite Care Companion pilot program. You’ll be matched one-on-one with an older adult who needs support living independently—and provide their family caregiver with a much-needed break.

This is more than volunteering—it’s a chance to build a meaningful relationship, share stories and smiles, and help someone feel seen, supported, and less alone.

What You’ll Do:

During weekly visits, you’ll provide companionship and light, non-medical assistance to an older adult in their home. Activities may include:

  • Engaging in friendly conversation

  • Reading together

  • Sharing hobbies or going for a walk

  • Light household tasks (sorting mail, making a snack, basic tech help)

Your presence helps a caregiver recharge while knowing their loved one is in good hands.

Who You Are:

We’re looking for volunteers who are:

  • Warm, patient, and respectful

  • Good listeners and clear communicators

  • Comfortable in home settings

  • Reliable and consistent

  • Open to different cultures and backgrounds

Prior experience is not required—just empathy, commitment, and a desire to help!

Where and When You'll Volunteer:

You'll volunteer in the client's home - This program serves Cumberland and York County - every effort will be made to match each volunteer with a client whose home is as conveniently located as possible.

You'll volunteer up to 3 hours/week (for each client match); schedules are flexible and will be determined based on the volunteer’s and client’s mutual availability (scheduling & availability will be a part of selecting a good match).

Training & Support:

You’ll receive 8 hours of training, including:

  • Orientation on policies, safety, and boundaries

  • Courses on aging, dementia, and inclusive caregiving

  • Ongoing learning opportunities and virtual workshops

  • Access to staff support and volunteer recognition events

Volunteers must complete a background check (including fingerprinting) and agree to follow SMAA’s non-medical care guidelines.

Why Volunteer with SMAA?

  • Make a real impact in the lives of older adults and caregivers

  • Build lasting relationships

  • Receive specialized training and ongoing support

  • Join a community of dedicated volunteers

  • Be celebrated at annual appreciation events!
