Caring Unlimited, the Domestic Violence Resource Center for York County, was founded by volunteers. It is the continued support of volunteers that makes it possible for us to offer innovative and life changing programs and services to so many individuals and families.

Offer support and resources to callers on the 24-Hour Helpline.

Choose your shifts according to your schedule: all shifts are done from your home or other private, confidential space, with the support of on-call Caring Unlimited staff.

One year commitment of two shifts per month expected.

Then come enjoy the view of Casco Bay and join the volunteer team at the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad.  We are looking for volunteers to become docents aboard our train.  Our docents share Maine’s unique railroad history with visitors from around the world. Moving history every day for over 25 years along the beautiful Bay in Portland, we want you to join our team!

Open daily from April through October, and seasonally for special events, the museum draws over 60,000 visitors a year, with volunteers donating over 10,000 hours annually. Come put your love of history to good use by joining our crew!   We provide all the necessary training for the position. Volunteers should be physically able, and commit to half a day or a full day of service.

Senior Companions Needed in Cumberland and York Counties!

Senior Companions are volunteers, age 55 and older, who volunteer with housebound elders and isolated adults who need help to maintain their independence. Senior Companions may provide transportation to doctor’s appointments or other errands and provide companionship through visits and phone calls.

Qualified applicants, who volunteer at least 10 hours per week, receive a tax-free stipend, travel and meal reimbursements, and other benefits including monthly training. All benefits are tax-free and do not affect social security, SSI/SSDI, subsidized housing, food stamps, LIHEAP, or other programs.

About the Workplace Safety Specialist/Trainers:

Are you organized, like people, and passionate about safety and equity?

Educators take notice! Safety Specialist volunteers will help OP Safety and Compliance Officer build and deliver training for the Ogunquit Playhouse safety plans and evacuation plans.

Some specialists will train our visiting design and production crews, as well as our actors and other volunteers in safety plans for various buildings on and off our campus. Trainings will happen throughout the season when new show companies arrive.

Other safety specialists may assist in writing, finalizing approved training to be delivered by trainers. Other safety specialists could update our Safety Training database to ensure all volunteer and paid staff have received and are up to date on their training.

Safety trainings will include Emergency Evacuation training, Active Attacker training, and more. 

Safety Specialists will work together to ensure records are current for staff who have or have not had various trainings, and will follow-up with scheduling.

When children and teens who have experienced multiple losses rediscover themselves in a safe and peer-supported community, hope and resilience flourish.

Since 1997, the Center’s Intercultural Peer Support Program has collaborated with Portland Public Schools and others to serve children, teens, and their families, who have resettled locally from countries experiencing war, persecution, and natural disaster.

Above and beyond losses due to the death of loved ones, they also have experienced collective loss—a community-wide devastation that destroys a sense of place, belonging, safety, and group identity. The Intercultural Peer Support Program promotes healing and resilience in the face of complex traumatic stress and loss by increasing social, emotional, and coping skills; fostering a sense of belonging; and renewing hope. When children and teens experience the benefits of peer support, we see a relief of distress, improved sense of well-being, ability to enjoy rewarding friendships, and ability to complete tasks. These benefits contribute to school success.

YOU can make a difference in these children’s lives! It requires an open heart, completion of training, and a commitment of about 4 hours a week (groups meet weekday afternoons) from November through May. Pink Feather Foundation serves students in the MSAD 17 (Oxford Hills area) and MSAD 16 (Poland, Mechanic Falls) school districts. We are looking for volunteers to pick up boxes from our Norway location and deliver to area schools. This opportunity is on an as-needed basis.

Make It Happen! students in grades 6-12 benefit from the generosity of our community through the volunteer program at the Portland Public Schools. Unique to this program, volunteers are referred to as Academic Coaches and meet students 1-2 hours per week. Site Coordinators match students with volunteers based on mutual interests, skills, and academic support needed.

Make It Happen! (MIH) is a program that provides multilingual students with a pathway to academic success and college readiness. Enrichment and Academic Centers are located in Portland's three middle schools and three high schools.

Make It Happen! exposes students to programming and resources that develop confidence and leadership skills, as well as building strong academic profiles.

Looking for a fun volunteering adventure? Come experience the excitement of running a real two-foot gauge train. Join the volunteer crew on the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad (MNGRR).  MNGRR volunteers operate the trains and share Maine’s unique railroad history with visitors from around the world.  We will train you to become a trainman, conductor and even an engineer.

The Administrative Support Volunteer at HART of Maine Cat Shelter plays a crucial role in ensuring
smooth day-to-day operations and providing excellent service to the public. This volunteer position
involves a range of responsibilities, including answering phone calls, greeting visitors, responding to
voicemail messages, managing filing systems, and assisting with processing adoption applications. As an
administrative support volunteer, you will be an integral part of the shelter's team, helping to facilitate

Primary responsibilities will include working with operations and other departments to determine the need for and to recruit volunteers to fulfill these plans. This person receives, reviews and processes all applications that are received and helps to recommend these volunteers to the appropriate department.

PRIMARY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Research, devise, and implement effective volunteer recruitment, retention, and communication strategies through the use of the website, print media, community calendars, public speaking, attendance at community meetings and events, etc.
• Train, mentor, and serve as initial primary contact for all volunteers (excluding fosters)
• Provide direction to volunteer program leaders to train and serve as primary contact for volunteers specific to their area (ie. volunteer adoption coordinators,)
• Prepare for, schedule, and provide regular volunteer orientations
• Keep all volunteer materials and programs up to date for use by staff and volunteer leaders.
• Partner with shelter staff to develop new volunteer programs.
● Uphold the shelter’s values and mission statement during interactions with the public and other staff
● Report to the Operations Director about any challenges with volunteer programs, volunteers, or staff involved with volunteer programs, and work to devise solutions to these issues.
● Track data on volunteer programs, and utilize it to create a monthly volunteer report to be submitted to management by the second Wednesday of each month

     o Report number of volunteer hours each month
     o Number of active/inactive volunteers (inactive volunteer= hasn’t volunteered in 6 months); propose methods to reinvigorate and reinvest both           active and inactive volunteers in the program

PSL/STRIVE is looking for volunteer teachers in our STRIVE Studios art program! 

STRIVE Studios is a dedicated visual art and movement program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, that focuses on being in the community, building artistic skills, and encouraging new ideas. Projects incorporate technical skills and personal interests to further develop individual artwork, with support from staff as needed. 

STRIVE Studios currently offers ceramics, painting, sewing, screen printing, beading, digital photography, yoga, movement, music therapy and more. We would love to add more offerings to our participants and are looking for volunteers to teach ongoing or 1-time classes. There are also work-trade opportunities available! Class curriculum and schedule is up to the instructor. Classes will be held Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:45a-11:45a and 1:45p-4:15p.

STRIVE is looking for volunteers to work in it's Tweens Program.

Tweens is a social program for our members aged 11-14. Held each Friday afternoon from 3:30-5:30, Tweens provides a safe, structured atmosphere to expand social opportunities for middle school students. Whether it is dance class, a baking lesson or an afternoon of arts and crafts, each week consists of an engaging activity lead by community members or STRIVE staff, designed for this age group.

Our Community Supports Day programs are seeking volunteers to regularly work with our clients on activities such as arts and crafts, reading, music, cooking, or anything that you're passionate about. Come share your skills and interests with our groups of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and support them in developing relationships with the broader community!

Our programs in Scarborough, Gray, and Wells are open Monday through Friday from 8am-4pm and we would love volunteers to come on a weekly or biweekly basis.  Please reach out and let us know what you would be interested in!

Position Purpose 

Our exhibits help children learn through play. We have STEM and Arts & Culture exhibits. Volunteers will learn how these exhibits operate. Volunteers will clean and maintain our exhibits. Duties include dusting, wiping surfaces, and vacuuming. Volunteers will also care for our props. Props care includes washing and laundry.

Portland Adult Education needs volunteers to assist English teachers with the lesson plan for multilingual learners in both online classes and in-person classes. Online classes use Google Classroom/Google Meet and volunteers should feel comfortable with that platform or other comparable ones. In-person aides would help with classes at the Portland Adult Education building on 14 Locust Street in Portland, ME.  Volunteer aides would help with group activities and in one on one situations in the physical classroom and in breakout rooms on Google Meet.  They might model dialogues or supervise reading groups following lesson plans created by the PAE teacher. MIRC has received a contract to provide 300+ culturally appropriate meals to asylum seeking families staying in a Saco hotel that is providing temporary transitional housing through May 2023. MIRC has hired a group of chefs from Congolese and Angolan communities to prepare meals that are familiar and culturally appropriate for these families Monday-Saturday in our commercial kitchen space at 63 Storer St., and is in critical need of volunteer support to help individually package these meals and transport them to the hotel which is about 5 minutes away by car. Having a vehicle will be important for this task, but is not absolutely necessary if at least one vehicle is shared among a group of volunteers. This is an excellent opportunity to take a hands-on role in supporting Maine's asylum seeking families as they seek permanent housing on their journey through the asylum process. PURPOSE OF JOB: Provide essential customer service to visitors by welcoming them to the museum and processing their purchases.

RESPONSIBILITES:

The Rufus Porter Museum of Art and Ingenuity is open from mid-June to mid-October, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Shifts are in 3.25 hour increments (9:45 am to 1 pm, 1 pm to 4:15 pm) with two people scheduled for each shift (one as a Museum Docent/Tour Guide, the other as a Museum Store Volunteer). Last tour is at 3:30 pm.

CHARACTERISTICS AND EXPERIENCE

TRAINING/ORIENTATION PROVIDED:

Tutors would meet online (Zoom, Google Meet or another online platform) with the same ESOL student once a week for an hour to review and reinforce work that they do in their classes at Portland Adult Education. Tutors and students may also meet in-person at Portland Adult Education on 14 Locust Street at a mutually convenient time during the morning, afternoon, or evening. 

The HIAS Refugee Resettlement Program at the Jewish Community Alliance is looking for volunteers to help move furniture and household items into the homes of newly arrived families. 

Specific tasks include: Transporting, lifting and moving furniture from specified locations and delivering to designated apartments/houses with supervision. Must be able to life 40-50 lbs., and to carry furniture on staircases. A large vehicle to help transport items is appreciated but not required. 

This is a unique opportunity to engage directly with refugee clients and help welcome them into the local community by preparing their new home.

Join our Kennebunk ReStore volunteer team. We are lucky to have a very dedicate group of volunteers who typically volunteer on a weekly basis. Volunteering with us is a great way to get involved in the community. We have also had many students and adults complete their community service hours with us.

Bernard, Leonnelle and their child (girl - 1) live in Portland and are from Burkina Faso. Leonnelle is a nurse and Bernard is a project manager and they like walking, music and movies, shopping, cooking, learning English, and reading. They need legal help as well as assistance with finding an apartment and transportation. They speak French, Lingala, Moore, Portuguese and some English. 

What does mentoring look like? That’s up to you and the family. In less complicated times, we like our mentors to take a more hands-on approach to help mentees integrate into the community- such as including them in family outings & introducing them to the area. Currently, mentoring can be done while social distancing and some support can be provided remotely. Checking in regularly, sending along translated info regarding COVID-19, helping mentees locate resources- these are all things that can be done while maintaining safe distance if this is preferred by mentor and mentees. We still ask that anyone applying to mentor through WTS live local to the Portland area, so that you can begin an in-person relationship with your mentees once you feel safe doing so.  

Friendly visitors add so much to the lives of the residents and members at the Cedars. The goal of being a friendly visitor is to provide companionship to our residents and members. This may be done through reading, playing games, sharing stories, writing a letter or just conversing. The resident usually indicates how they would like this time to be spent. Our friendly visitors often assist residents by escorting or transporting to and from activities provided within our community. Traits of a friendly visitor here at The Cedars include: The ability to relate effectively, positively and compassionately with residents, members and staff. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Interest in getting to know residents personally. Ability to work with minimal supervision once tasks and responsibilities have been clearly defined. We are an all-volunteer, non-profit, public benefit corporation serving the communities of Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Cumberland, Falmouth, Cape Elizabeth, Gorham, Scarborough and Windham. TIP volunteers are specially trained citizens who are available 24/7/365 to be called upon by emergency responders (police officers, firefighters, paramedics and hospital personnel) to assist family members, witnesses, and other bystanders in the first few hours following a traumatic event wherein victims and survivors often feel hopeless, confused, and in emotional shock.

Victims and survivors are often confronted with circumstances and situations for which they are totally unprepared and they often feel devastated, alone, and overwhelmed. The emergency responders on scene must focus on their job duties and responsibilities during a crisis and are not able to provide the immediate support victims and survivors need. TIP volunteers are able to provide that much needed immediate emotional and practical support to those they are called to be with.

There are opportunities for couples to volunteer, train together, and go out on calls together. However, as two volunteers - they would be responsible for registering for a total of 6 combined shifts, and at least one person would have to respond to a call during each of those times.

Furniture Friends is in need of one-time or reoccurring volunteer groups to help deliver furniture to our clients in need.

Our volunteer groups commit to a three hour time-frame to serve families in Greater Portland. It is a volunteer opportunity that is active and builds teamwork, ideal for various service groups and corporate volunteer days. We work with both youth and adult volunteers.

The Adopt-a-Trail program at Mount A is an all-volunteer effort that provides individuals an opportunity to help conserve and maintain our trails. By “adopting” a trail in the Mount A Conservation Region, volunteers take responsibility for helping with trail upkeep. Trail adopters become helpful assistants by monitoring their chosen trail and providing some basic maintenance throughout the year.

Who can adopt a trail? Any interested family, organization, individual or neighborhood group can care for a trail. The primary adopter must be at least 18 years old, however, involving youngsters is highly encouraged!

What are the duties of an Adopt-a-Trail volunteer? The expectation is for adopters to provide basic assistance to the Conservation Crew in maintaining their selected trail. Activities include keeping the trail surface and corridor clear, cleaning drainage ditches, and clearing debris from bridges, stairs, and viewing decks. Other responsibilities include litter clean-up, maintaining the trailhead area, and reporting trail hazards for safety issues.

Of major importance, adopters serve as an extra set of eyes for the Conservation Crew. A once-a-season visit (every three months, winter optional) to your trail provides vital assistance in keeping up with trail maintenance. Additional visits after storms or whenever convenient are certainly appreciated.

Training: Mount A staff will provide orientation and train volunteers in safe techniques for accomplishing Adopt-a-Trail duties, and work with groups to get them started. Staff will work with volunteers until both parties are comfortable, and will continue to coordinate activities after the adopters are working on their own.

Is your family, group or organization looking for a volunteer opportunity? Mount A is seeking seasonal volunteers to help us care for our native plant beds! Native plants are adapted to local environmental conditions, provide vital habitat, help maintain species diversity, and are kept in check by natural succession.

Volunteers will "adopt" a summit plant bed and take responsibility for its upkeep (weeding, mulching, etc.). Once trained, adopters can work at their own pace and on their own schedule throughout the season. A time commitment of one growing season is required (approx. May-Sept).

RTP is looking to expand it's Board of Directors with compassionate individuals interested in guiding the mission of this important nonprofit agency. The term is three years and fundraising is not required for this position. Volunteers at 40 Walch Drive in Portland assist the Operations team with the collecting, sorting, evaluating, organizing, preparing, and packaging medical supplies by specific criteria for shipment on our containers. Examples of tasks: reviewing donated items when the arrive, sorting like-for-like items together, cutting or wiping off dates, repackaging items, counting and bagging items, labeling items, moving items to medical categories, packing boxes and building pallets of boxed items. There is no minimum hours commitment for this work but it would be great to have a schedule to ensure that there is consistency of volunteering. These are the most common volunteer opportunities at PWH and there is always a need for help.

Volunteering is available in person by appointment ONLY.  The first step is to attend a new volunteer orientation now held over ZOOM, after which we will share with you the details of how to make an appointment and the precautions we have in place.

Packers support the BackPack Program at FCS by packing bags full of snacks and meals for students to take home over the weekend.

The BackPack Program at FCS provides more than 50 children in K-12 in RSU5 who are living with the effects of chronic hunger with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food to eat during weekends throughout the school year. Proper nutrition over the weekend ensures students can come to school on Monday ready to learn. 

This position is where the FCS Values Statement begins: “We are dedicated to helping one another with respect and compassion, in an inclusive and welcoming environment.” Volunteers here will be a friendly and informa­tive first point of contact for visitors as they come through the Center’s main entrance. Greeters will direct patrons to the Food Pantry, Thrift Shop, bathrooms, etc.; and answer questions as they arise.

This shift can be performed standing and/or sitting.

Cashiers in the Thrift Shop are a welcoming first face as patrons enter the shop.  They also bag and ring patrons purchases up when ready to leave!

The Thrift Shop at Freeport Community Services is a primary source of revenue for FCS, most of which enables FCS to offer a myriad of programs and services to the community. Donations & recycling helps our planet by keeping useful items out of a landfill, helps strengthen our communities by funding programs and services for Freeport Community Services and provides a good opportunity for thrifty shoppers to find great bargains. 

The FCS Thrift Shop is among the best thrift stores in New England. It is welcoming, organized and conveniently located in downtown Freeport with free parking, and features a wide selection of in-season clothing and footwear, as well as housewares, furniture, vintage goods and collectibles. There’s always something new and unexpected at the Thrift Shop.

Cashiers receive a 10% volunteer discount and a first-look at items before they arrive on the Thrift Shop floor.

Sorting Room Assistants support the FCS Thrift Shop by working as part of a behind-the-scenes team in the Sorting Room to sort, fold, and hang donations before they go out to the Thrift Shop floor for sale.

This shift requires standing and the ability to lift up to 15 lbs.

Distribution Assistants support the FCS Food Pantry by helping shoppers find what they are looking for in the pantry and restocking products as necessary.

This shift requires standing and the ability to lift up to 30 lbs. 

Donations Collectors support the FCS Food Pantry by picking up donations at local grocery stores, delivering them to the pantry, and helping to unload. 

Volunteers can use a truck provided by FCS to perform this duty.

This opportunity requires ability to walk, stand, and dynamic movements like bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, stooping as needed.

Greeters support the FCS Food Pantry by being a welcoming first point of contact for shoppers when they arrive, checking them into our database, and helping to maintain a queue as shoppers wait to be admitted into the pantry.

This position can be performed sitting and/or standing.

In less complicated times, we like our mentors to take a more hands-on approach to help mentees integrate into the community- such as including them in family outings & introducing them to the area. Currently, mentoring can be done while social distancing and some support can be provided remotely. Checking in regularly, sending along translated info regarding COVID-19, helping mentees locate resources- these are all things that can be done while maintaining safe distance. We still ask that anyone applying to mentor through WTS live local to the Portland area, so that you can begin an in-person relationship with your mentees once you feel safe doing so. 

The FCS Community Meal is an opportunity for anyone to enjoy a homemade meal. The lunches are free of charge to anyone, from anywhere, and serve approximately 60-75 people on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month. 

Volunteers working as part of the Cooking Team will communicate with the Volunteer Coordinator to determine a menu (based on surplus items in FCS' Food Pantry), which they will cook at FCS' kitchen on the Thursday before the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month. The Cooking Team is responsible for cooking & bagging meals, as well as cleaning the kitchen.

We are looking for ongoing volunteers to spend time with young people in our drop-in afterschool programs located in public housing communities around Portland. Ages, interests, and abilities vary greatly between our programs so we are looking for volunteers who are interested in getting to know a lot of different youth and being a caring adult in their lives. 

We provide training for all volunteers and they are always paired with experienced staff members. Volunteers help us to distribute attention and activities to more youth in the space. A couple of hours in our program could consist of reading books with little ones, playing Uno with Middle School students, then helping a teen write an essay for school. Every day is unique and focused on the youth in the space and what their needs are that day.

We prefer volunteers who can commit to 2-3 hours per week on a given afternoon in one location so they can build relationships with and consistency for the youth in that neighborhood. If possible, we would like a two month minimum commitment, again for consistency for our youth. 

We require all volunteers to be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination prior to volunteering. We also require masking and social distancing regardless of vaccination status in our program spaces. 

Junior Achievement (JA) is seeking friendly and motivated volunteers (from all occupations) to teach pre-planned courses on entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy to Maine students. Volunteers lead sessions over the course of one-day or multiple weeks and work directly with the educator to schedule the lessons. Classes are taught during school hours and all materials and training is provided.

PWH has a very active list of annual fundraising events that need a lot of volunteer support to be successful. Members of the Events Committee will provide support as needed for the individual events. See our website for this year’s events. This committee is looking for self-starters who want to help create, plan, and implement successful fundraising events. Members will meet biweekly in-person or via Zoom to create fun exciting events that will promote and propel the mission of PWH. Desired skills include: marketing, planning, sales, and an abundance of flexibility and creativity.

Volunteers at the 312 Canco Road warehouse in Portland assist the Warehouse Manager and other volunteers with more traditional warehouse tasks. Examples of tasks: placing packed boxes on labeled shelves, unloading/loading the box truck, assisting with inventory projects, pairing crutches, bundling canes, pulling and labeling boxes in preparation for container shipments, repairing equipment, and cleaning items.. There is no minimum hours commitment for this work.

Beacon Hospice needs cold noses for warm feelings!!  So many of our patients light up immediately when a dog comes to visit.  So we are recruiting handlers with certified dogs to join our team.  Dogs must be certified therapy dogs with insurance, have proof of rabies shots and be courteous citizens.  Handlers must complete 21 hours of direct patient care hospice volunteer training.  Free training will be arranged at a mutually convenient time at the South Portland office and consists of weekly 3-hour classes for 7 weeks. A key tool in our dementia care is the creation of a life chart for the patient who can no longer speak.  You can be instrumental in contacting family and gathering the life story of the patient suffering from Alzheimers and various dementias.  Then you can also create the collage, putting into graphic form the details of this person's life.  These posters help to preserve the identity of the person who can no longer tell you about themselves, thereby helping caregivers to know the person behind the disease and to find a bond with them.  Artistic skills are not essential so much as identifying what is most significant to the person and graphically portraying it.  Some patients are still able to connect with these images, families love them, and caregivers use them to find a way into their memories.  Training is 4 hours for doing the charts and 21 hours for contacting the families.  We will show you all you need to know.  Free volunteer training will take place at a mutually convenient time.  Please call Donna Teague at 207-772-0929 for more details.

From November 10-19, WinterKids supporters from across Maine, New Hampshire and beyond will be able to bid on our silent auction and support the WinterKids mission for the 2021 – 2022 season. On November 19th, we will be returning to a LIVE in-person celebration at the Portland House of Music. Hosted by Coast 93.1 Morning Show Host Blake Hayes, License to Chill will feature ten (in honor of our 10-year anniversary) high-ticket live auction items. The event will also feature one of WinterKids' favorite bands, Vinyl Tap.

WinterKids is looking for your support in gathering items for the silent auction portion of this event. Volunteers will be responsible for contacting local businesses and asking for donations, then coordinating with WinterKids' Staff to get items to the office. Requested commitment is at least 3 hours. Volunteers will receive an overview of the event and an orientation about WinterKids.

Through Welcoming the Stranger, mentors have access to a large network of individuals and groups already engaged with the immigrant community who can offer support and guidance if specific needs - housing, schooling, medical care, etc.- arise. As a mentor, your primary task is simply to be there for newly arrived folks who would otherwise feel alone in a strange world. You don’t have to be an expert, just a friend.

Tutors are paired with adult English language learners and spend 1.5 to 2 hours per week over the course of 6+ months working towards the student’s personal English goals.

Currently, lessons can be conducted over FaceTime, WhatsApp, Zoom, Skype, or any convenient virtual learning platform but, we hope that when it is safe to do so these lessons can resume taking place in person at public meeting locations such as libraries, community centers, and at our 181 Brackett Street office. 

Prior experience as an educator is helpful, but not necessary, as extensive training and ongoing support are provided. The ideal candidate is fluent in English, independent, reliable, creative, and can practice cultural humility. We have a thorough and selective volunteer intake process-- get started today!

Preble Street's Teen Center, located at 343 Cumberland Avenue, is a drop-in day shelter for people in need under the age of 21. Inside, the Teen Center Soup Kitchen serves warm, nutritious meals 3 time a day, 7 days a week, for up to 35 youth. Volunteers help to prep, serve, and clean up from each meal. You'll help Portland youth get back on their feet when you volunteer with us here!

Volunteers help with Breakfast (7-10am), Lunch (10:30-1:30), and Dinner (5-7:30).

Florence House is Preble Street's emergency women's shelter and long term housing facility for women in Portland. Florence House's soup kitchen serve between 40 and 60 women 3 meals a day, 7 days a week. Volunteers help prepare, serve, and clean up for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

St. Elizabeth's Child Development Center is looking for a handyperson to help a few hours a month with light painting, and general upkeep of the Center.  This opportunity is ideal for someone who likes to "fix things", and  enjoys being in a learning environment.

We prefer a commitment of 2 - 4 hours a month - from May to November - but are flexible with dates.

Through These Doors offers a number of unique ways to become a part of the movement for ending domestic violence in our community. Use your talents to strive for peace, support survivors and their children, share your experiences and learn new skills.

At Through These Doors, we believe volunteering is at it’s best when the talents and passions of the volunteer and the needs of the organization line up. Our commitment is to explore your interests and skills and help determine where you can be of most service to the survivors we support.

Currently, the area where we need critical support is from direct service volunteers. These folks engage with survivors directly, providing emotional support, safety planning, information about partner abuse and resources. There are several ways direct service volunteers can support survivors including, but not limited to, helping to staff our 24-hour confidential helpline and facilitating support groups.

To become a direct service volunteer, you will be required to participate in our 44-hour Core Comprehensive Advocacy, Intervention, Response, and Ethics Training (CAIRET). During this training, you will learn about the dynamics of abuse, the cultural roots of violence and oppression, and the core components of social change advocacy. Our training also incorporates active listening skills, how to provide support in a non-judgmental way, trauma-informed best practices, all while learning about Through These Doors' programs, procedures, and philosophy in order to support survivors and their families in the best way possible.

Alzheimer's Association Faith Outreach Representatives (FORs) are community engagers that raise awareness of Alzheimer's Association programs, provide basic disease information, and link consumers to Alzheimer’s Association services. FORs serve as liaisons between the Alzheimer's Association and local faith groups and congregations. FORs represent the Alzheimer’s Association by sharing information about Alzheimer’s disease, free resources offered through the Alzheimer’s Association, and the many ways to join our cause at local community and education events.

Once a week, we have volunteers work with students in our Native Language Space.  The goal of the space is to provide a safe place for students to speak in their native language, whether it be French, Spanish, Portuguese.  The volunteers need to be somewhat fluent in one of these languages and they engage students in conversation, games and other type of activities in a friendly atmosphere.  The commitment is 2 hours, one day a week.  The volunteers will rotate through 3 groups of students in the Native Language Space that are selected by their teachers and support staff.  We provide training and there are lots of resources in the different languages.  We teach academics in English all day, but we do want to encourage students to maintain and practice their native languages.  If you would like to participate or have any questions, please call Sylvie Montello at 874-8175 or email montes@portlandschools.org

Alzheimer's Association Community Educators (AACEs) are volunteer public speakers who help raise awareness, provide education and expand the reach of Alzheimer's Association programs in the community.  AACEs deliver Alzheimer’s Association Core Curriculum using prepared training materials on topics related to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias as well as information for individuals and families impacted by the disease.

STEM Sisters, out of Service-Learning and Volunteering at USM connects young women on STEM pathways at USM with working STEM professionals to go out to our local high schools to encourage girls to pursue STEM. We are seeking women from all walks of life (and awesome dudes) who are interested in making progress in building up successful women to pursue STEM pathways.

This is not so much a mentoring program as it is an ideas exchange and means to building community between women from high school on up.

There are many ways to get involved and you can commit to as little as 2 hrs a month to as much as 12, depending on your capacity. 

We need volunteers to pair with other working professionals or, ideally, with USM students to share your experiences and lead STEM activities and talk about STEM topics via show-and-tell to excite high school girls about STEM.

Together, they use their creativity and passion to raise funds and awareness for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.
