Our FISH (Friends in Service Helping) Medical Rides Program is in need of volunteer drivers! The FISH Program offers transportation to Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Arundel seniors who need to get to medical appointments. Riders may use FISH when they have no other means (friends or family) of getting to an appointment. This program does not handle repetitive appointments for life-sustaining procedures, any rider who has undergone anesthesia, or wheelchairs. Drivers must provide references, undergo a background check, have a registered and inspected vehicle, and provide proof of vehicle insurance.  You can register as a driver and let us know your general availability and service area!

Volunteer: Museum Store Volunteer

PURPOSE OF JOB: Provide essential customer service to visitors by welcoming them to the museum and processing their purchases.

RESPONSIBILITES:

Greet and welcome visitors Orient visitors to their museum experience Explain admission fees Assist visitors with store purchases Cash handling, including use of Square Reader (cash register program) Answer the telephone Open/close Museum Store if opening/closing volunteer not available Assist, on occasion, with special events if schedule allows (not required)

The Rufus Porter Museum of Art and Ingenuity is open from mid-June to mid-October, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Shifts are in 3.25 hour increments (9:45 am to 1 pm, 1 pm to 4:15 pm) with two people scheduled for each shift (one as a Museum Docent/Tour Guide, the other as a Museum Store Volunteer). Last tour is at 3:30 pm.

PURPOSE OF JOB: Provide essential customer service to visitors by welcoming them to the museum and processing their purchases.

RESPONSIBILITES:

The Rufus Porter Museum of Art and Ingenuity is open from mid-June to mid-October, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Shifts are in 3.25 hour increments (9:45 am to 1 pm, 1 pm to 4:15 pm) with two people scheduled for each shift (one as a Museum Docent/Tour Guide, the other as a Museum Store Volunteer). Last tour is at 3:30 pm.

The HIAS Refugee Resettlement Program at the Jewish Community Alliance is looking for volunteers to help move furniture and household items into the homes of newly arrived families. 

Specific tasks include: Transporting, lifting and moving furniture from specified locations and delivering to designated apartments/houses with supervision. Must be able to life 40-50 lbs., and to carry furniture on staircases. A large vehicle to help transport items is appreciated but not required. 

This is a unique opportunity to engage directly with refugee clients and help welcome them into the local community by preparing their new home.

Bernard, Leonnelle and their child (girl - 1) live in Portland and are from Burkina Faso. Leonnelle is a nurse and Bernard is a project manager and they like walking, music and movies, shopping, cooking, learning English, and reading. They need legal help as well as assistance with finding an apartment and transportation. They speak French, Lingala, Moore, Portuguese and some English. 

They have just moved into a new apartment in Portland. They need help getting items for their new apartment and settling into the community. 

What does mentoring look like? That’s up to you and the family. In less complicated times, we like our mentors to take a more hands-on approach to help mentees integrate into the community- such as including them in family outings & introducing them to the area. Currently, mentoring can be done while social distancing and some support can be provided remotely. Checking in regularly, sending along translated info regarding COVID-19, helping mentees locate resources- these are all things that can be done while maintaining safe distance if this is preferred by mentor and mentees. We still ask that anyone applying to mentor through WTS live local to the Portland area, so that you can begin an in-person relationship with your mentees once you feel safe doing so.  

Through Welcoming the Stranger, mentors have access to a large network of individuals and groups already engaged with the immigrant community who can offer support and guidance if specific needs — housing, schooling, medical care, etc. — arise. As a mentor, your primary task is simply to be there for newly arrived folks who would otherwise feel alone in a strange world. You don’t have to be an expert, just a friend.

TIP volunteers are specially trained citizens who are available 24/7/365 to be called upon by emergency responders (police officers, firefighters, paramedics and hospital personnel) to assist family members, witnesses, and other bystanders in the first few hours following a traumatic event wherein victims and survivors often feel hopeless, confused, and in emotional shock.

Victims and survivors are often confronted with circumstances and situations for which they are totally unprepared and they often feel devastated, alone, and overwhelmed. The emergency responders on scene must focus on their job duties and responsibilities during a crisis and are not able to provide the immediate support victims and survivors need. TIP volunteers are able to provide that much needed immediate emotional and practical support to those they are called to be with.

TIP volunteers are dispatched at the request of police officers, firefighters, paramedics and hospital personnel to assist:

family members and friends following a natural or unexpected death. victims of crime including rape, assault, robbery, and burglary victims of fire disoriented or lonely older persons persons involved in vehicle accidents persons who are distraught and seeking immediate support family members of a person who has completed suicide

What Do TIP Volunteers Do?

provide emotional support help arrange for shelter, food, clothing, and transportation notify family and friends serve as liaison between the victims and emergency and hospital authorities help arrange follow-up services provide information and referral to appropriate agencies for ongoing assistance

Volunteer Requirements:

Driver’s license with working vehicle and cell phone. Must live in Greater Portland or the surrounding area. Maintain a working cell phone, internet access and an email account (you must have frequent access to internet and email to be a Volunteer). Personal GPS Navigation System for routing to calls. Attend mandatory monthly CE Meetings which are held the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Complete fingerprinting and criminal background investigation. Provide a DMV driving record printout (available online through each state’s website). Provide a copy of auto insurance declarations page reflecting current coverage. TIP volunteers will be scheduled for 3 "on call" shifts per month for 12 hours each shift, 7am-7pm OR 7pm-7am. You provide your availability for the month and 3 of those dates are scheduled for your shifts.

There are opportunities for couples to volunteer, train together, and go out on calls together. However, as two volunteers - they would be responsible for registering for a total of 6 combined shifts, and at least one person would have to respond to a call during each of those times.

Volunteer: Adopt-A-Trail

The Adopt-a-Trail program at Mount A is an all-volunteer effort that provides individuals an opportunity to help conserve and maintain our trails. By “adopting” a trail in the Mount A Conservation Region, volunteers take responsibility for helping with trail upkeep. Trail adopters become helpful assistants by monitoring their chosen trail and providing some basic maintenance throughout the year.

Who can adopt a trail? Any interested family, organization, individual or neighborhood group can care for a trail. The primary adopter must be at least 18 years old, however, involving youngsters is highly encouraged!

What are the duties of an Adopt-a-Trail volunteer? The expectation is for adopters to provide basic assistance to the Conservation Crew in maintaining their selected trail. The Adopt-a-Trail program at Mount A is an all-volunteer effort that provides individuals an opportunity to help conserve and maintain our trails. By “adopting” a trail in the Mount A Conservation Region, volunteers take responsibility for helping with trail upkeep. Who can adopt a trail? Any interested family, organization, individual or neighborhood group can care for a trail. The primary adopter must be at least 18 years old, however, involving youngsters is highly encouraged!

The BackPack Program at FCS provides more than 50 children in K-12 in RSU5 who are living with the effects of chronic hunger with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food to eat during weekends throughout the school year. Proper nutrition over the weekend ensures students can come to school on Monday ready to learn.

We are looking for ongoing volunteers to spend time with young people in our drop-in afterschool programs located in public housing communities around Portland. Ages, interests, and abilities vary greatly between our programs so we are looking for volunteers who are interested in getting to know a lot of different youth and being a caring adult in their lives. 

We provide training for all volunteers and they are always paired with experienced staff members. Volunteers help us to distribute attention and activities to more youth in the space. A couple of hours in our program could consist of reading books with little ones, playing Uno with Middle School students, then helping a teen write an essay for school. Every day is unique and focused on the youth in the space and what their needs are that day.

STEM Sisters, out of Service-Learning and Volunteering at USM connects young women on STEM pathways at USM with working STEM professionals to go out to our local high schools to encourage girls to pursue STEM. We are seeking women from all walks of life (and awesome dudes) who are interested in making progress in building up successful women to pursue STEM pathways.

Community Representatives will help the Alzheimer's Association by representing the organization at a minimum of 12 events per year and distribute Alzheimer’s literature at events or appearances in their local community. KEY ACTIVITIES: Consult with staff and early-stage advisors to schedule early-stage engagement activities, secure event logistics, assure group safety, and coordinate volunteers to provide hospitality. At social engagement events, provide hospitality and support needed to attendees by working with additional volunteers to provide a positive experience for ES groups. Responsible for the management of early-stage attendance statistics & rosters. Collect, distribute, and manage additional materials & literature needed by early-stage attendees at events. Set up, arrange and prepare the room before and after each group. Coordinate any speakers/presenters with local chapter staff. Encourage participants to provide assistance and emotional support to one another. Present pertinent Association materials and information to group members. Connect members of the community with additional Association services by proactively making referrals to Alzheimer's Association programs & free 24/7 Helpline. QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to be empathic and separate personal needs from group needs. Strong listening and effective communication skills. Ability to redirect and facilitate discussion as well as fulfill the duties and responsibilities as described in the Facilitator Agreement. Ability to create and maintain a safe environment where participants’ thoughts and feelings are valued and group members are treated with fairness, equity and respect. With help from advocates like you, we've passed critical legislation and increased federal research funding five-fold since 2011. But our work isn’t done and we need dedicated advocates like you to build on this success in Congress and in every state capital.

We’ll train you to advocate in a variety of ways, some of which take just an hour or two every few months. Whatever your experience and availability, we’re eager to have you on our advocacy team! Will you join us?

The rider may play games on horseback, maneuver around obstacles and/or develop his/her skills to learn to ride without physical support or even without a horse leader. Therapeutic riding is a way to develop confidence, balance, strength, coordination and endurance. The Executive Director (ED) reports to the Board of Directors and has overall strategic and operational responsibility for Gbokpasom, volunteers, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission. S/he will initially develop deep knowledge of field, core programs, operations, and business plans.  Duties also include making recommendations to the Board, implementing policies, overseeing grant, developing and managing administrative systems, representing the Organization to academic institutions and the broader community, and serving as chief volunteer and fundraiser. The Executive Director oversees an annual operating budget, recommends, and distributes such annual grants.  

Responsibilities: Exercising responsibility, delegated by the Board of Directors, for all aspects of the Organization administration, including supervising other staff/volunteer, meeting technology needs, and managing the building owned by the Organization Providing leadership and direction for grant programs and administrative operations; overseeing, prioritizing, and evaluating the work of other staff/volunteer Serving as the principal representative of the Organization in interactions with all funded and inquiring organizations, consultants, investment managers, major vendors and other interested parties Providing schedules, agendas, minutes, and other logistics for Board meetings (normally five per year) Preparing recommendations for approval by the Board regarding budgets, grants, policies, goals, staffing and major expenditures Intelligent use of technology in support of the Organizations work, including social media and evolving technologies as appropriate Preparing operational updates and analytic reports for the Board related to the Organizations programs, finances, and other matters as appropriate Assuring that the Foundation website and data bases are maintained and updated 

Qualifications: A passion and caring for the mission and purposes of Gbokpasom an outcomes orientation, knowing how to effectively capture impact/outcome information and utilize it well in communications. A minimum of two years of senior management-level leadership experience. Professional, highly effective written, verbal and presentational communication skills. Proven strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain important relationships with institutions, professionals and clients. Demonstrated success in operational and financial oversight, strategic planning, organizational development and nonprofit governance. Technological understanding of, and experience with computer software programs and systems, and a demonstrated ability to manage the development of an interactive, engaging website. An interest in and ability to explore and develop additional resources that enhance the Organizations work, while honoring the rich history and work of the organization. Ability to interact effectively with the Board of Directors and demonstrated prior experience in working with a Board. Extensive experience in International Aid Organization functions is highly desired. A bachelor degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred. Please note! The Executive Director and all positions within Gbokpasom are volunteer until grant proposal is approve at which time the annual budget for Executive Director salary and benefits would be discuss.
