Volunteer: Use your Tech Skills to Help Older AdultsDo you have a passion for technology and helping others? Are you looking for a way to apply your experience working with Zoom and other virtual platforms? You might be a great fit for the Safety Observer Volunteer role with Southern Maine Agency on Aging's Agewell programs! Agewell offers two health and wellness classes for seniors: Tai Chi for Health & Balance and A Matter of Balance. Both are evidence-based to reduce the risk of falls among older adult participants. When we lead these classes virtually, we are able to reach many of our older neighbors who face barriers to in-person classes such as transportation availability and cost, caregiving duties, and even Maine's winter weather! However, virtual classes bring a host of challenges as participants learn the platform (Zoom) and we ensure safe practice remotely. The Agewell Safety Observer Volunteer will track attendance, monitor class both visually and auditorily, and admit virtual participants from the waiting room to the class. The Safety Observer supports participants with technical questions to the best of their ability, and acts as the conduit between the participants and the class instructor—asking (but not providing) for modifications or clarifications as needed and providing feedback to the instructor about technical issues. We have an urgent demand for Safety Observer Volunteers! Please reach out volunteer@smaaa.org to use your tech skills to make a difference for our older neighbors! Assignment: Volunteers can begin right away after they attend a training. Volunteers can contact SMAA Volunteer Services for more information at volunteer@smaaa.org or 207-396-6595. Volunteer: Share your Engineering Skills & Make a Difference!Do you have skills and experience in engineering? Do you enjoy hands-on problem solving? Do you love making things with your hands? Do you want to participate in a community effort producing concrete, meaningful results for your neighbors? Volunteer with WindowDressers! WindowDressers is a nonprofit organization that brings community volunteers of all economic and social situations together to improve the warmth and comfort of interior spaces, lower heating costs, and reduce carbon dioxide pollution by producing low-cost (no-cost for low-income households) insulating window inserts that function as custom, interior-mounted storm windows. Southern Maine Agency on Aging has partnered with WindowDressers to fill a number of volunteer needs: 1. Measuring Volunteer: Measuring Volunteers work in teams of two visiting clients at home to conduct a measurement appointment. Volunteers will take measurements for installing window inserts and quote the client on the price of the install. At least one volunteer will be required to have access to a vehicle as well as a valid driver's license. Volunteers will be paired based on geographic proximity to clients and may choose to carpool to the client's home or drive separately. Access to a laptop and experience working with basic computer programs is a plus. 2. Local Coordinator: Community Builds are like old-fashioned barn-raisings for inserts! Volunteers gather together for several days to build all of the inserts that have been ordered in their neighborhood. Experienced volunteers teach new volunteers, food is provided, and the end results are high-quality inserts at a very affordable price and a stronger, more connected community. Community Builds typically take place between September and January each year. Local Coordinators are key volunteers who help anchor a Community Build in their neighborhood—organizing the event from start to finish. The Local Coordinator helps recruit and organize a team of 4-10 volunteers to help run the event. They also work to secure a donated location for the Community Build, schedule the event, and oversee the event coordination. With a strong volunteer team, this is mostly a management role. 3. Food Coordinator: Providing food is an important community-building aspect of each Community Build. A Food Coordinator is a key team member for each Community Build; they help secure food donations, and are responsible for the set-up and clean-up of the food for each day of the Community Build. Where will I work? When will I work? What length of commitment is expected? When and where will volunteer training/orientation take place? Contact us today to get started! We are specifically looking for Coordinators in York and Biddeford/Saco! Organization: Southern Maine Agency on Aging (Greater Portland - Cumberland & York Counties) Do you care about the environment? Volunteer: Center for Grieving Children - Creating Healing Communities - Intercultural ProgramWhen children and teens who have experienced multiple losses rediscover themselves in a safe and peer-supported community, hope and resilience flourish. Since 1997, the Center’s Intercultural Peer Support Program has collaborated with Portland Public Schools and others to serve children, teens, and their families, who have resettled locally from countries experiencing war, persecution, and natural disaster. Above and beyond losses due to the death of loved ones, they also have experienced collective loss—a community-wide devastation that destroys a sense of place, belonging, safety, and group identity. The Intercultural Peer Support Program promotes healing and resilience in the face of complex traumatic stress and loss by increasing social, emotional, and coping skills; fostering a sense of belonging; and renewing hope. When children and teens experience the benefits of peer support, we see a relief of distress, improved sense of well-being, ability to enjoy rewarding friendships, and ability to complete tasks. These benefits contribute to school success. YOU can make a difference in these children’s lives! It requires an open heart, completion of training, and a commitment of about 4 hours a week (groups meet weekday afternoons) from November through May. Please visit www.cgcmaine.org for more information about the Intercultural Peer Support Program. Register for one of our one-hour volunteer info session to learn more by contacting volunteer@cgcmaine.org. Volunteer: Call for Board MembersAre you looking for a unique leadership opportunity? Have you been hoping to put your talent in the service of a progressive educational organization? Well, look no further! If you are committed to holistic, learner-driven and democratic education, we are looking for you! School Around Us (SAU) is currently recruiting for our board of directors.
School Around Us was founded in 1970 to embody the philosophy of holistic education — the insight that as learners we develop meaning, identity, and purpose through self discovery, relationships, connection to the environment, to our community, and to the spiritual dimension of life. For the last 50 years, SAU has pursued this vision as a small parent-run school for K - 8 students, guided by this mission and powered by the generosity and hard work of our parents, students, and teachers. Now, we are embracing an evolution in how we do this, out of a desire to re-vivify this deep-rooted educational vision in a way that meets today’s world of complex human, societal, technological and political forces. We’ve recently shifted away from our parent-run school model, hired a Director of Programs and have evolved to become a co-learning community that offers full-time, part-time and public programs to homeschooling families in Maine. As a part of this process, we are hoping to revamp our Board and recruit new members to support our first Director of Programs and aid in our continual evolution.
We are seeking a variety of experiences, skills, and perspectives, which could include: Fundraising/Development Alumni Relations + Engagement Nonprofit Governance (i.e. bylaws revision) Strategic Planning Finance/Accounting Legal Architect and landscaping professionals Thought leaders in Democratic/Holistic Education Commitment to/interest in progressive education and/or co-learning communities Experience at School Around Us and/or commitment to its longevity
We are looking for people who will: Attend monthly board meetings Potentially serve on one of our committees (currently in development) which may include: Alumni Relations, Development/Fundraising, Budget/Finance, Renovation, etc. Be able to make a 4-6 hour commitment monthly Advocate for our needs in the community and among your colleagues and peers Make a personal, charitable contribution to SAU, to the best of their ability
Interested in being considered for our board, please contact Cedar Lukacs at cedar@schoolaroundus.org

Volunteer: Support for Saco Kitchen for Asylum Seeking FamiliesMIRC has received a contract to provide 300+ culturally appropriate meals to asylum seeking families staying in a Saco hotel that is providing temporary transitional housing through May 2023. MIRC has hired a group of chefs from Congolese and Angolan communities to prepare meals that are familiar and culturally appropriate for these families Monday-Saturday in our commercial kitchen space at 63 Storer St., and is in critical need of volunteer support to help individually package these meals and transport them to the hotel which is about 5 minutes away by car. Having a vehicle will be important for this task, but is not absolutely necessary if at least one vehicle is shared among a group of volunteers. This is an excellent opportunity to take a hands-on role in supporting Maine's asylum seeking families as they seek permanent housing on their journey through the asylum process. Culturally appropriate meals represent a crucial aspect of the support services they need. Please sign up here to support: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4caeae22a6f5c16-mirc1#/
