Volunteer: Native Language SpaceOnce a week, we have volunteers work with students in our Native Language Space. The goal of the space is to provide a safe place for students to speak in their native language, whether it be French, Spanish, Portuguese. The volunteers need to be somewhat fluent in one of these languages and they engage students in conversation, games and other type of activities in a friendly atmosphere. The commitment is 2 hours, one day a week. The volunteers will rotate through 3 groups of students in the Native Language Space that are selected by their teachers and support staff. We provide training and there are lots of resources in the different languages. We teach academics in English all day, but we do want to encourage students to maintain and practice their native languages. If you would like to participate or have any questions, please call Sylvie Montello at 874-8175 or email montes@portlandschools.org Organization: Howard C.
