PWH has a wide variety of at-home sewing projects for volunteers to assist with throughout the year. Examples of tasks: hemming sheets, cutting down towels, making reusable shopping bags or masks out of blue wrap, creating children’s dresses and shorts We also have a sewing circle that meets almost monthly at PWH to work on projects.

Partners for World Health (PWH) is a non profit organization in Portland, ME dedicated to reclaiming serviceable medical equipment and unused medical supplies and shipping to hospitals and health clinics in need around the world. PWH also helps to improve the local environment by redistributing items within New England. In addition, PWH coordinates global health volunteer opportunities to various parts of Africa and Asia.

PWH is seeking a volunteer driver for our 20 foot box truck to pick up medical supplies and equipment. As a driver, you'll be the friendly face representing our organization, picking up donated goods within our community, with opportunities to travel across New England. We pick up supplies and equipment from locations in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Connecticut as well as Maine. 

We are seeking someone with a clean driving record, a valid driver's license, and the ability to lift up to 50lbs. No CDL is required. DOT certification or willingness to obtain is a plus.

PWH is in need of volunteers to help with our pick-ups in our box truck and van!  This volunteer opportunity does involve heavy lifting, loading and unloading the truck (not just driving).  Volunteers are paired together or with a staff member for pick-ups, and these are typically from healthcare facilities.   This work involves driving our 20’ box truck or cargo van to hospitals, medical facilities, clinics, nursing facilities and even individuals’ homes and other locations to pick up donated items. Travel is primarily in Maine but could include pick-ups in other New England states. Examples of tasks: driving to facilities and loading pallets or individual boxes of items, unloading items at the warehouse, picking up beds or other equipment. This is a physical job requiring the ability to use a pallet jack & load/unload up to 50lbs.   You do not need a special drivers license for our vehicles but do need a clean driving record to be added to our insurance.

 

Volunteers at 40 Walch Drive in Portland assist the Operations team with the collecting, sorting, evaluating, organizing, preparing, and packaging medical supplies by specific criteria for shipment on our containers. Examples of tasks: reviewing donated items when the arrive, sorting like-for-like items together, cutting or wiping off dates, repackaging items, counting and bagging items, labeling items, moving items to medical categories, packing boxes and building pallets of boxed items. There is no minimum hours commitment for this work but it would be great to have a schedule to ensure that there is consistency of volunteering. These are the most common volunteer opportunities at PWH and there is always a need for help.

Volunteering is available in person by appointment ONLY.  The first step is to attend a new volunteer orientation now held over ZOOM, after which we will share with you the details of how to make an appointment and the precautions we have in place.

PWH has a very active list of annual fundraising events that need a lot of volunteer support to be successful. Members of the Events Committee will provide support as needed for the individual events. See our website for this year’s events. This committee is looking for self-starters who want to help create, plan, and implement successful fundraising events. Members will meet biweekly in-person or via Zoom to create fun exciting events that will promote and propel the mission of PWH. Desired skills include: marketing, planning, sales, and an abundance of flexibility and creativity.

Volunteers at the 312 Canco Road warehouse in Portland assist the Warehouse Manager and other volunteers with more traditional warehouse tasks. Examples of tasks: placing packed boxes on labeled shelves, unloading/loading the box truck, assisting with inventory projects, pairing crutches, bundling canes, pulling and labeling boxes in preparation for container shipments, repairing equipment, and cleaning items.. There is no minimum hours commitment for this work.
