Volunteer: Senior Companion Program

Senior Companions Needed in Cumberland and York Counties!

Senior Companions are volunteers, age 55 and older, who volunteer with housebound elders and isolated adults who need help to maintain their independence. Senior Companions may provide transportation to doctor’s appointments or other errands and provide companionship through visits and phone calls.

Qualified applicants, who volunteer at least 10 hours per week, receive a tax-free stipend, travel and meal reimbursements, and other benefits including monthly training. All benefits are tax-free and do not affect social security, SSI/SSDI, subsidized housing, food stamps, LIHEAP, or other programs.

In Southern Maine, The Opportunity Alliance sponsors the Foster Grandparent Program. Foster Grandparents are men and women age 55 and over who enjoy volunteering their time with children in schools and child development centers.

As a Foster Grandparent, you become part of the network of community members and organizations who work every day to:

Help children learn to read and provide one-on-one tutoring Be a mentor to teenagers and young children Care for infants and children with special needs Help English Language Learners achieve success

And when you volunteer, you’re not just helping others—you’re helping yourself. Volunteering leads to new discoveries and new friends. Plus, studies show that volunteering helps you live longer and promotes a positive outlook on life.
