Opportunities From: VolunteerME Southern Maine

Volunteer: Gleaning Volunteer

Gleaning is the practice of harvesting unsalable crops from farmers' land and redistributing them so they do not go to waste. Either these crops are "seconds" and have minor flaws, or there is no market for the amount of crops grown. Once harvested, the produce is typically brought to food pantries and programs for use. It is a win/win situation, in which the food waste is reduced and healthy, fresh, local produce is available to more Mainers.

We need volunteers for harvesting, transporting, and preserving the crops, as well as for food security publicity events throughout the year. You can join us for one glean or continue gleaning throughout the season. Please do not hesitate to contact connor@ccfoodsecurity.org or gleaning@ccfoodsecurity.org with any questions you may have!
