Who We Are

Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine exists to inspire discovery and imagination through exploration and play. The Museum & Theatre serves as an indispensable resource for families and educators, helping to create a broad community devoted to our children's development and learning. Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine was started by the Junior League in 1976. By 1980, the Museum was housed on Stevens Avenue on the Westbrook College campus. The Museum opened its doors to the general public at its current location in May of 1993. In the fall of 2008 the Museum merged with the Children's Theatre of Maine to create Maine's first environment of interactive exhibits, programs and theatre.

What We Do

The Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine exists to inspire discovery and imagination through exploration and play.

We strive to be an indispensable community resource devoted to children’s continued development and learning. We value relationships, and work together with parents, caregivers and diverse partners to build a foundation of educational support for children and families across Maine and beyond.

While we are centered in the positive growth of the whole child, we focus on play-based experiences in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), arts and culture, performing and visual arts and early childhood education.

Our brand new, 30,000 sq. ft. building, located on Thompson’s Point and opened to the public in the spring of 2021 - thanks to broad support from the community - provides us the opportunity to engage our visitors in these focus areas and more. It features a state-of-the-art, 100 seat theatre, a 10,000 square foot science center, multiple arts workshop spaces and dedicated exhibits geared toward infants, toddlers and young children.
