Who We Are
Mount Pleasant Cemetery Corporation in South Portland was created by an act of the State Legislature in 1899. Mount Pleasant Cemetery Corporation (MPCC) is a non-profit, non-denominational public cemetery and recorded its first burial in 1742. Included in our ancestors who rest here are 14 veterans of the Revolutionary War and over 300 veterans of every war since then, including 2 Medal of Honor recipients. MPCC is an active organization and recently completed a restoration of its historic Summer House to its original 1888 colors and condition. Many grave lots are still available for present and past residents of South Portland or Cape Elizabeth.
What We Do
We are an all volunteer organization that not only provides a final resting place for loved ones, but also is a treasure trove of history and genealogy facts for persons of any age. We work closely with the S.P. Historical Society and the S.P school system to enhance the student's history knowledge. We welcome any history and genealogy questions and will endeavor to find (to the best of our ability) the answers.
Mt. Pleasant Cemetery offers a century-old perpetual flower fund. This provides both convenience and peace of mind to distant or ailing members who wish to honor their loved one's memory. This fund ensures that fresh, live geraniums are planted by volunteers on the third Thursday of each year, prior to Memorial Day.
