Who We Are
The Society houses horses who have suffered from abuse or neglect and have been seized by Maine law enforcement agents. They are rehabilitated, (re)trained, and evaluated for placement in adoptive homes.The MSSPA is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) entity and receives no federal, state or local funding. The Society is entirely funded by donations, bequests, grants, and fund-raising activities. MSSPA does not charge for its services and seeks no reimbursement from any public source.
What We Do
The mission of the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals is to provide refuge, rehabilitation, and placement of seized equines; support the placement of surrendered horses, and educate the public.

Q. – How old do I have to be to volunteer?
- Due to the nature of the horses on our farm who have been abused and neglected, the MSSPA has strict age restrictions.
- You must be 16 to volunteer without an adult.
- Volunteers under 16 are required to have a waiver signed by their legal guardian.
- Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult co-volunteer.
