Preble Street

Since 1975, Preble Street has been turning hunger and homelessness into opportunity and hope by providing barrier-free safety and services to empower people struggling with poverty and inciting the public will for programs and policies informed by social and economic justice. From a nutritious meal to crisis intervention, from clean clothes to healthcare, from shelter to a permanent home, Preble Street programs provide services 24/365 for youth and adults, including veterans and victims of human trafficking, new Mainers and elders, meeting urgent needs and providing them tools to move beyond the crisis in their lives and achieve their goals for housing, health care, education, employment, mental health care, addiction treatment, legal assistance, education, employment, and family reunification.

The mission of Preble Street is to provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty and to advocate for solutions to those problems.

The People We Welcome

The people we meet come from every background. Some were born into abject poverty and abuse. Others were born into a loving and stable family, but life’s circumstances dictated a wildly unanticipated course. Some are temporarily homeless because of a sudden crisis. Others have been homeless for years.

Everyone—individuals or families, youth or adults, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness—is welcome.

As varied as their lives and needs are, so are the programs and services that Preble Street offers:

• Sometimes that means feeding a hungry mother and child.
• Sometimes it means finding shelter for a homeless teen or adult.
• Sometimes offering a place where a young person can resume her education.
• Sometimes providing employment counseling for someone ready to work but unable to find a job.
• Sometimes it means welcoming a person to their first home.
