In Southern Maine, The Opportunity Alliance sponsors the Foster Grandparent Program. Foster Grandparents are men and women age 55 and over who enjoy volunteering their time with children in schools and child development centers.
As a Foster Grandparent, you become part of the network of community members and organizations who work every day to:
- Help children learn to read and provide one-on-one tutoring
- Be a mentor to teenagers and young children
- Care for infants and children with special needs
- Help English Language Learners achieve success
And when you volunteer, you’re not just helping others—you’re helping yourself. Volunteering leads to new discoveries and new friends. Plus, studies show that volunteering helps you live longer and promotes a positive outlook on life.
Foster Grandparents are role models, mentors, and friends to children who need a little extra help. All you need to join is the ability to give the kind of comfort and love that sets a child on the path toward a successful future. If you’re 55 or older and want to share your experience and compassion, you have what it takes to be a Foster Grandparent.
