If you are committed to holistic, learner-driven and democratic education, we are looking for you! School Around Us (SAU) is currently recruiting for our board of directors.
School Around Us was founded in 1970 to embody the philosophy of holistic education — the insight that as learners we develop meaning, identity, and purpose through self discovery, relationships, connection to the environment, to our community, and to the spiritual dimension of life. For the last 50 years, SAU has pursued this vision as a small parent-run school for K - 8 students, guided by this mission and powered by the generosity and hard work of our parents, students, and teachers. Now, we are embracing an evolution in how we do this, out of a desire to re-vivify this deep-rooted educational vision in a way that meets today’s world of complex human, societal, technological and political forces. We’ve recently shifted away from our parent-run school model, hired a Director of Programs and have evolved to become a co-learning community that offers full-time, part-time and public programs to homeschooling families in Maine. As a part of this process, we are hoping to revamp our Board and recruit new members to support our first Director of Programs and aid in our continual evolution.
We are seeking a variety of experiences, skills, and perspectives, which could include:
- Fundraising/Development
- Alumni Relations + Engagement
- Nonprofit Governance (i.e. bylaws revision)
- Strategic Planning
- Finance/Accounting
- Legal
- Architect and landscaping professionals
- Thought leaders in Democratic/Holistic Education
- Commitment to/interest in progressive education and/or co-learning communities
- Experience at School Around Us and/or commitment to its longevity
We are looking for people who will:
- Attend monthly board meetings
- Potentially serve on one of our committees (currently in development) which may include: Alumni Relations, Development/Fundraising, Budget/Finance, Renovation, etc.
- Be able to make a 4-6 hour commitment monthly
- Advocate for our needs in the community and among your colleagues and peers
- Make a personal, charitable contribution to SAU, to the best of their ability
