Who We Are
Portland Wheelers is a nonprofit serving Greater Portland since 2015. Our mission is "Outdoor Adapted Biking Fun" for people who cannot ride by themselves, but would love to go for a ride. Our volunteers, all experienced cyclists, range in age from 21-70+. To ride for Portland Wheelers each "pilot" (pedaler) first goes through an extensive training. Then, each month, s/he commits to choosing at least two half-day ride sessions.
What We Do
From May through October, we offer free, recreational, therapeutic rides on uniquely designed, electric-assist trikes. Rides run Monday through Saturday, mornings and afternoons. With the "wheelers" (passengers) sitting up front and our "pilots" (pedalers) behind, we travel in "pods" of two or three trikes. Individual rides vary in length but generally run from 15-45 minutes. We serve people who, because of their disabilities, rarely get outside. The rides help to open up our wheelers' worlds and absolutely improves their quality of life. Adventure. Excitement. Camaraderie. Wheelers are out in the sun and fresh air, connecting with their pilots, each other, and the community at large. We ALL have a lot of fun! In 2023, over 90 volunteer pilots gave more than 900 wheelers more than 2,400 rides.
